EP Review - Trapper Keeper (EP) by The Legal Matters (2017) (Future Man Records)

For those who are uninitiated to the sweet janglepop brilliance of this band, The Legal Matters are something of a powerpop / janglepop 'super-group' formed from members of the following bands:

Keith Klingensmith - Hippodrome / Phenomenal Cats

Chris Richards - a band mate of Klingensmith's in the aforementioned bands and latterly involved in a highly recommended solo project Chris Richards & The Subtractions.

Andy Reed - An American Underdog

Their previous two releases, 2014's self titled album on Klingensmiths own Futureman Records and more specifically the brilliant 2016 Omnivore Recordings released Conrad, received widespread critical acclaim for their melodic harmonies and stripped back powerpop / janglepop sound and aroused immediate references to bands such as The Raspberries and Big Star.

To keep the interest of their fans between releases, the band have released this beautifully crafted set of  covers of Teenage Fanclub (Don't Look Back), The Beatles (She Said She Said), Big Star (When My Baby's Beside Me) all of which are supplemented by a version of Klingensmiths superb self penned track, Pull My String from the Conrad album.

Although all the covers remain essentially true to the originals, the band have added their own response by stripping away any crunch to the guitar work and adding the sheer purity of Klingensmith's vocal delivery in a continuation of the work that Klingensmith  previously released on the covers albums KK + TM Vol.2 on his own 'Futureman' label, under the name of Keith Klingensmith and the TM Collective.

Still pertinent despite their insistence on the pop end of the janglepop spectrum and still beautiful in all they do, this EP reminds us that anything they release is becoming increasingly essential... and its free to download HERE !!!
